Volunteering: stay committed and local

I call volunteering ‘The Second Best Paying Job a High School Student can have.’  The best paying job is jumping your ACT or SAT score through rigorous and fun Preparation.  But volunteering can also pay you a robust sum in scholarships.

Some families pay a fortune so junior can be altruistic abroad over the summer.  Don’t spend the dough.  Admissions officers often don’t come from silver spoon backgrounds; when they read that you were trying to save the leopard beetle in Costa Rica over the summer and that you’ll never take your comfy existence for granted again, they might think you’re a spoiled kid trying to pad that application.

Recently, a nonprofit organization that promotes youth volunteerism, Do Something, surveyed admissions offices at 33 selective colleges and universities. Seventy percent were more impressed by sustained local volunteer work than a summer of volunteer work abroad.

So stay local and committed to a singular volunteer cause.  It’s even better if you invent your own volunteer activity, which shows selflessness and leadership.  So with a friend, set up a free homework assistance group for middle school and high school students, or teach swimming or volleyball for free weekly to disadvantaged youth, or create a talent show and sell tickets to raise $5000 for new theater lights at your school.  Think of a cool cause, find a motivated friend, and make it happen.  It’ll be the second best paying job you’ll ever have in high school.
